Settings range from Australia to South Africa, London to Baghdad; but what makes this a richer collection still is Williams’ use of voice, lightly ironic, sometimes deeply satirical. The range here is impressive, often delightful: a re-creation of the production of ‘A Day in the Life’ (yes, the Beatles!). But the stories dip too into the complex and political: a harrowing tale of a Zimbabwean dictator haunted by his own murders; the bombing of Durban student dissidents fighting against Apartheid; and a fabulous satire on the creative writing workshop, which academics especially will love. These are not stories one easily forgets; and Williams is a writer certainly worth watching.'
