Light in the Dark

We asked for stories that would make readers think. We certainly got them. Some edge towards the dark, though all have some closure and turn back towards the light. Just as Advent time rushes towards the darkest days so that we can return to the light, these twenty-four stories bring light into our dark.

Snowflakes

Our theme for 2015 is snowflakes. Stories that contain snowflakes and that are like snowflakes. Unique and perfectly formed. As they melt into the psyche they bring a life-sustaining force. Snow can be beautiful and it can be treacherous. It can swing from one extreme to another in seconds. It is an important part of the nature cycle. Here you will find that our writers have risen to the challenge.

A very good read. As with all anthologies everybody will have their favourites. I think two of the stories deserve a special mention as stand-out fabulous for me. 'Eight Hours Going Nowhere' by Sarah Evans was so simple yet brilliant in its execution. A story that will stay with me for a long time. As will the beautifully written 'Undertow' by Clare Weze - a stunning story about a young boy falling in love with an unwittingly bewitching traveler who passed through his small California town. I look forward to reading more from these wonderful writers.

Great collection of fresh, innovative and moving stories. Best read near a roaring fire, as some of the stories are chilling indeed. Highly recommended

Excellent stories from a range of talented authors. Really enjoyed the story by Tracey Holland, brought back many memories of my own childhood.

I'm not reviewing my own contribution to this book (honestly!) but I should add that I really enjoyed the rest of the stories in this collection. There's a nice balance of stories (in tone and in length) and is a perfect volume for dipping into.

If you enjoy short stories, then you'll love this collection. Even if you're not a fan, I urge you you to read this, you won't be disappointed. This collection takes us from the idyllic Butterfly Ballet through a child's priorities in Remembering Trivia, and dark tales in Stump Road and Sick Note. There's the fun title of Sex on the Beach, about a crab and his attempts to reach his unrequited love. Read it in one sitting, as I did, or dip into it over a cup of coffee, and enjoy.

Clara's Story

Clara will not be daunted. Her life will not end when her beloved husband dies too young.  She will become a second mother to the young children who live away from home in order to visit a rather special school. When life becomes desperate for a particular class of disabled children growing up in Nazi Germany she takes a few risks. Is her ultimate faith in the goodness of human beings a fatal flaw that leads to her tragedy, or is her story actually one of hope?

The social history starting before World War 1 and continuing to the present day, was extremely interesting and Clara herself had the attitude that where there’s hope there’s life. A well-written and thought-provoking book.
I was drawn to the illustration on the book cover and wanted to know more about Clara. All the characters are so well described, I found they stayed with me long after I’d finished the book. Clara’s positive attitude shines through and can teach us much. A book about the Holocaust that is both interesting and yet has a light touch. It may not be a “whodunnit “, but is certainly a page turner.

The second book in the Schellberg Cycle showing what it was like to grown up in the 1930s and 40s in Germany.

Inspired by letters that arrived at a small cottage in Wales in 1979, when a woman began to recognise the names of the girls she had been to school with.
It's the story of a school for disabled children that defied the Nazi regime.

This is a book that schools should stock and that should definitely be more widely known and it's stories like these that keep people alive and make us think.

Written with a strong voice.
Highly recommended.
