The tales are timeless treasures to read!

Once again, Mehreen Ahmed’s prowess in weaving proficient, literary narratives to convey her distinctive creativity and imagination, is affirmed in this anthology of short tales.

An extract from the book

Sensible Shoes

I sat here, like a loyal friend, by her floor bed. Waiting for my owner, Samira Khan, to wake up. She did in a while. I saw her frowning and looking groggy. Laying on her pillow, she reached out for a wooden box which held her medication. Last night, like every other night, she’d filled up her small pitcher and placed it beside her bed. She took out a pill blister pack, pinched one out, and popped it into her mouth. She swallowed hard with some water from the pitcher. With a sigh of relief, she lay back on the pillow. She looked vaguely at a pair of pants hanging from a hook on the bedroom door—not hers. The morning was dull and dreary with deep, hanging clouds. She pushed and rolled herself out.

A vegetable vendor was shouting on the street. Just as well, I also heard his croaky voice and readied myself. Samira was going to run downstairs. He always came along with his cart at this time of the day. My owner slid her feet and rested them roughly upon my tongue. She checked her vegetable basket, and decided to buy some potatoes and green papaya from him. She craned her neck through the window and told him to pack her one kilo of potatoes and one medium sized papaya. Quickly, she picked up her purse and climbed down the stairs. On the street, the vendor had wrapped her potatoes and green papaya in an old, crumpled newspaper sheet. Samira opened her purse and gave him the money for a kilo of potato and a green papaya. The vendor took the notes with a polite smile, but said that the price had gone up because of inflation.

“Since when?” Samira asked.

I listened.

Between Worlds by S. Nadja Zajdman

We all inhabit multiple worlds and the real person lives in the liminal space between them.

In this fascinating collection of vignettes and creative memoir, we are invited to explore several constructs of the times and places defined by the narrator, and also envisaged by those around her. These accounts have appeared in other publications, but gathered here the whole becomes greater than its parts and tells a larger story.

S. Nadja Zajdman brings her rich and unique voice to this story: Between Worlds.

This particular collection of Ms. Zajdman's is by far the most interesting, dynamic, illustrative, and emotive all at once. Each essay speaks volumes and is chalk full of descriptions so clear, that one can envision being directly in that particular setting. (this is one reason why I feel that one needs to pause between essays, and perhaps re-read sentences so as to "feel" what is being conveyed and to retain that emotion).

The special moments conveyed...the memories that each appear to illustrate are Ms. Zajdman's special and unique talent in allowing the reader to actually time travel to those special and specific instances and experience those moments as one reads the words expressed.

As Ms. Zajdman expresses in her introduction, these essays were written over a period of 20 years and express her talent of capturing her mother's spirit as well as her own extensive and discriminating and diverse ability to put thought onto the page.

This collection will not disappoint..! Bravo!

Blood and Electricity by Steven John

We took an excursion around the sun again this year, five hundred million miles back to where we started.’ From A Brief History of Time in Our House, a story in this collection.

There are no UFOs or extra-terrestrials in this first collection of short stories and flash fiction by Steven John. Blood and Electricity is about the vital currents that flow through and around us, powering our lonely orbits of life. We are all bright stars that appear close to one another when viewed with the naked eye, but the truth is, we’re separated by incomprehensible distances.

“A hidden gem”

Steven John is a master of short fiction and this collection does not disappoint. Heartfelt, poignant, sensitive and beautifully crafted, these stories are fascinating snapshots that are engaging from start to finish. If you enjoy excellent writing and story-telling, I highly recommend.

Each piece beautifully written by Steven John, rich with detail and emotion. Always interesting and thought-provoking and kept me turning pages for the next story in this gorgeous collection. Can't wait for more.

Steven John's stories use everyday detail to reveal truths about life and growing up and relationships. They are warm and sometimes sad in their familiarity. I particularly liked the descriptions in "The Lake," and my favourite protagonists were in "The Composer's Tall Trees" and "Paunch Porsche Pooch." I highly recommend "Fashion in Men's Footwear, Late 20th Century" and "Blueberry Muffins" as well. All around a testament to the power of the short story to reflect our lives.

I love Hannah’s writing styles. Each story is self-contained, but together they provide a wonderful journey through the diversity of life. It’s not just one voice or style at different ages, it’s different voices and styles.

Retallick’s stories are imbued with a wealth of experiences and emotions – exploring friendships, love, loss and longing, and the eternal search for connection. But there is humour and hope at their heart, and this warmth shines through. Our lives may be woven from what appears to be fragile thread, but this is a writer who understands the real resilience of the human heart; she knows that “however many times you’ve been let down and however drenched you become, there are always reasons to sing.” A truly accomplished debut collection.
I loved this collection of short fiction and it was great to see the list of awards, prizes and placements that each has secured.
